When we think about opportunities that can change the course of a nonprofit's impact, grants often top the list. Especially for those organizations facing financial challenges, grants can open doors to additional capacity that once seemed out of reach. The Bates Philanthropic Initiative (BPI) is dedicated to empowering financially disadvantaged youth in Colorado by providing access to skills-based and technical education. If you’re a Colorado 501(c)(3) providing wraparound services to in-need 17–19-year-olds, let’s explore the BPI grant application process together and make sure you’re set up for success!

Understanding the BPI Grant Application Process

Before diving into the application, it’s important to understand what the BPI grant is all about. We provide grants to registered Colorado nonprofit partners who deliver critical support services to in-need students and eliminate the barriers to their education.  From providing solutions for transportation, child-care, course, certification, and materials fees, and apprenticeship opportunities, nonprofits are at the forefront of making CTE more accessible to our under-served young adults.  We are seeking to support nonprofits in expanding their impact.

Here’s what you need to know about the process:

• Eligibility: BPI grants target financially disadvantaged youth in Colorado. We fund registered 501(c)(3) organizations providing the critical wraparound services that young adults need to stay on course to complete their education.

• Focus Areas: The grants support skills-based and technical education programs. Think trade schools, certifications, associate degrees, and hands-on training.

• Application Period: Keep an eye on deadlines. BPI grants are invitation only and begin with submitting a letter of intent (LOI), so timely submission is key.

How to apply to BPI?

Now that you have your materials ready, let’s talk about the actual application steps. The process is straightforward, but attention to detail is crucial.

• Step 1: Visit the Official BPI Website

Start by going to the BPI Grants page. This is your hub for all application forms and updates.

• Step 2: Submit the Letter of Intent

Fill in your organization's details and complete the questionnaire. Ensure that your LOI is submitted prior to the deadline. Qualified organizations will be invited to apply shortly after the LOI deadline.

• Step 3: Complete the Online Application Form

If you are invited to apply for a grant, complete the online application form through Kaleidoscope, our grant platform. The application window is typically two to three weeks for submission.

• Step 4: Upload Your Documents

Attach all the required files: financials, nonprofit certification, proposed program budget.

• Step 5: Review and Submit

Before hitting submit, review every section carefully. Impact statements, targeted population to be served numbers, and success stories are critical elements.

• Step 6: Confirmation and Follow-Up

After submission, you’ll receive a confirmation email. BPI may contact you for additional information. Grant winners will be notified within a month after the grant window closes.

Tips for Writing a Winning Grant

• Stay Focused: Keep your program aligned to BPI's mission and on topic. Explain your goals and how the grant will help you achieve them.

• Use Examples: Mention the student challenges you are addressing and how your program will specifically address them.

• Provide the Numbers: Making claims is easy, backing the up with the numbers is harder. Include the number of students the grant will serve, provide information on the population demographics your nonprofit covers, bring your stories credibility with the data.
